Mowing

  • Basically mow your lawn whenever the lawn needs it - eg in the summer on domestic lawns once a week is good, but this can be stretched out to every 2 weeks if needed.

If you want to improve your lawn, the more often you cut, the better it gets. In the winter you need only cut as required (or not at all, it’s up to you!)

  • An ideal height for a domestic lawn is around 1 to 1 ½ inches, although this can vary depending on circumstance, time of year and growth - eg a golf green is able to be kept very low but only during the summer and only because it is cut 3 to 4 times a week, so on your lawn if you can cut more and regularly during the season you can lower the height, and vice versa for raising the height.

In autumn you would gradually raise the height to the overwinter height and in spring you gradually lower it to the summer height.

  • Select a mower that fits your gardens needs and your own physical abilities, but always keep it sharp, keep it maintained and keep the height of cut at a manageable level.

Automowers are becoming more and more popular in domestic gardens and can be an excellent choice, although they do need some time to instal them properly and they don’t cut right up to edges or fence lines so you still have to trim these areas manually.
