Over Seeding & Top Dressing

  • Over seeding is the introduction of new seed to your lawn to invigorate older lawns or fill out a thinning lawn.

  • Top Dressing is the application of a soil, sand or compost evenly to the lawn surface.

It has various uses in professional green-keeping but for domestic lawns its main purposes are to introduce a beneficial substrate to the lawn or to bed in seed.

Top dressing has to be applied evenly and then worked into the lawn surface to prevent it smothering the grass.

  • Yes! - We offer a lawn recovery and rejuvenation service which involves heavy scarification to remove unwanted debris, the seed is then directly ‘planted’ in the lawn using a Eliet DCZ over-seeding machine and followed by top dressing with a seaweed based compost. We finish off the process by applying ‘Pro-Seed’ 8-12-8 fertiliser, a wetting agent and seaweed conditioners to give the seed the best possible start in life.

  • If we have not done so already our Feed Team will be in to apply the seed feeding and development treatment, after which we ask that you don’t walk on the lawn (if you can help it) and don’t cut the lawn until the seed has chitted (sprouted) and the young grass is in general at least 2-3 inches tall.

At this point you can do an initial cut where you ‘take the tops off’ (and remove the clippings), then leave it again for another couple of weeks before you cut it again, then slowly reduce the height of cut.

We would also ask that you water - For the first couple of days give about an inch a day to really hydrate the soil then switch to ‘little and often’ - enough to keep the soil around the seed moist. This means you need to keep an eye on the seedlings and the weather forecast and water as required. Do this until the seedlings are about 2 inches tall, after which you can switch back to the ‘one inch once a week’ system of watering.
